New owner: how o steam?

Post  mbellodi on 24.08.10 22:40

Hello everybody,
I've just bought a halogen/ventilated oven. It says I can steam food but it doesn't say how. I've read that I shouldn't put the water in the glass container but in a pan insted and then put the food hight up. Is it true? Why can I not boil the water in the glass container if I can do it to clean the oven?
Thanks for your help.
Have a lovely evening
michela

Because the water will spin in the bowl and probably go all over the food if placed on the low rack.

Hi Michela,

for steaming food you can,

On the low rack place a small container of water, on the top rack place your food on the steamer tray (tray with holes)

or

Make a parcel with foil
Place food on a sheet of foil, add a few drops of water, wrap it loosely. The water will create steam in the parcel.

Thanks from me too, Reeta

I was considering whether to buy a halogen cooker or not. This was a deciding issue. I think I'll go ahead and get the JML 12Litre which looks like good value.

Hope you enjoy using your JML, I've had mine just a year now and absolutely love it. I don't use special Halogen recipes, just the temperature and times specified for a fan oven.

Hi Brigadoon,

if you type keywords such as "steaming" or "steam vegs" in the search box you will get all posts relating to steaming . . .

Timing depends on what you want to steam.
