As Craig Revel Horwood would say......

Post  TriciaB on 29.12.11 17:56

....."That was a complete disarster dahling". Haven't used my new oven because of the Christmas holidays, so I decided to give it a try with something really simple today. How I wish I hadn't! I chose a baked potato! My recipe book said to cook on 200 for 40 minutes but to check after 30 minutes. It also said to oil the potato, wrap it in foil and put it on the bottom rack. I did as instructed, but when I came to check after 30 minutes when it should be soft, the potato wasn't even warm, let alone on it's way to being cooked. Almost dying from hunger, I took it out of the oven, discarded the foil, and microwaved it for ten minutes. Now I had a cooked potato! Then I put it back in the HO, this time unwrapped, and blasted it on one side for ten minutes, turned it, and did the other side. I must admit that it tasted delicious, but where did I go wrong please? afraid

Hi Tricia

Use the top rack with the extender ring, don't use foil. Yes, rub with oil, season and turn after 20 minutes, then cook for another 20 minutes (if larger than 200grams it may need longer). The hot air circulates so much better this way than using the bottom rack.

Thank you Junie. I have read a lot on here about 'trial and error', but when you are following a recipe from a book written specifically for halogen ovens and then find out that the instructions are wrong, it is very disheartening to say the least. Just wondering whether to give my next one a quick zap in the microwave first anyway just to get it started?

Hi Tricia

The microwave would speed it up but I do like mine totally cooked in the HO. It is frustrating that we find a lot of info on HO's to be way off when we try to follow the advice - that's why this forum exists.
Hopefully the help here will remove much of the 'error' part.

Good Luck

Thank you June, I am sure you are right but I was soooo hungry which is why I used the microwave in the first place. I don't have a lot of patience when it comes to paying good money for something which isn't right in the first place! Don't honestly know how most of us would exist without this forum. Thanks again, Tricia
