Use a steamer instead

Post  Halogen Newbie on 13.03.11 16:18

I tried steaming veg in my Hal Oven but they took ages. Much quicker to use a steamer: 15 minutes.

Unless someone has a better idea?

I don't know a quicker method for steaming vegs in the halogen oven.

If your steamer is faster then why not use it for that purpose but for those of us without a steamer, the HO will have to do

Steaming continued

Post  Halogen Newbie on 13.03.11 21:58

Well I was actually thinking that because steaming was taking so long in the halogen that perhaps I was doing something wrong. I have since discovered that adding salt to the water makes the water evaporate at a lower temperature and steam more effectively.

I'd just like to know how YOU do it.

To steam vegetables you can,

On the low rack place a small container of water, on the top rack place your vegs on the steamer tray (tray with holes)

or

Make a parcel with foil

Place vegs on a sheet of foil, add a few drops of water, wrap it loosely, place on top rack. The water will create steam inside the parcel.

Hi

It does take longer to steam in the HO just as it would in your 'big' oven. I still use my metal folding steamer inside a pot on my hob and let the HO do all the other things that it is good at. Very Happy

Still on 'L' plates!

As I'm new to using a HO and new to this site (Hi everyone!)I am a bit puzzled by the steamer tray. If I use it to steam veggies then I presume I can't roast meat at the same time. I want to avoid using foil for health reasons. Maybe I should stick to steaming on the stove and only roast veggies in the HO. There is such a lack of instruction available with these ovens! Thank goodness for this site. Smile

Hi KeenCook,

if you don't use foil parcel to steam your vegetables then you can place them on the steamer tray - on the high rack with a bowl of water on the bottom rack.

But you won't be able to cook the meat at the same time.

To solve this problem you can either buy another halogen oven Laughing or steam your veggies on the stove.

Hi Keencook

I stand by my previous post - quote -

'It does take longer to steam in the HO just as it would in your 'big' oven. I still use my metal folding steamer inside a pot on my hob and let the HO do all the other things that it is good at.'
